Narcan is available. Training is available.

Why It Matters

  • Opioid overdoses are a leading cause of accidental death in the U.S.

  • Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50x stronger than heroin, is driving a rise in overdoses.

  • Carrying Narcan can save a life — it gives time until emergency responders arrive.

What Georgia Law Says

  1. Standing Order / Statewide Protocol
Georgia has a statewide “standing order” that lets pharmacists dispense naloxone to people who are at risk of opioid overdose, or anyone who might assist someone at risk — without needing an individual prescription. 2. Availability at Pharmacies
Many pharmacies in Georgia stock naloxone over-the-counter (behind the counter). You can ask the pharmacist for it. Resource: Georgia Overdose Prevention+2Northeast Health District+2

  3. Immunity Protections
Georgia law provides immunity (civil, criminal, etc.) for people who administer naloxone in good faith or help someone during an overdose. This is meant to encourage people to carry and use naloxone without fear of legal repercussions. Resource: College of Pharmacy UGA+2Georgia Department of Public Health+2

  4. Medical Amnesty / Good Samaritan Law
The 911 Medical Amnesty Law in Georgia protects people who call for help for an overdose victim. Also, the law supports naloxone distribution and use by laypeople.
